WATER RESOURCES IN CAMEROON

WATER RESOURCES IN CAMEROON:

Cameroon is situated in Central Africa and have almost all the main climatic characteristics of Africa. To the north is the sahel regions with semi-arid conditions,in the middle, the savana or grasslands;in the southern and eastern regions are the forest zones(part of the Congo bassin) and finally the coastal regions that borders the atlantic ocean.
There are two main seasons;a dry and a rainy season. The annual rainfall varies from about 500mm in the semi-arid regions to about 10000mm in the coastal regions.
The is a vaste network of rivers and streams and in the northern regions where there are few rivers dams have been constructed.
In the major towns of cameroon pipeborne water is supplied by the national water cooperation(SNEC).

In most rural areas water is got from streams and rivers .With the help some international organisations these streams are used as water catchment areas from which clean pipeborne water is supplied to the villages.

In the northern part of Cameroon there has been some epidemics of cholera because of the scarcity of pipeborne water, but even in these regions there has been improvements because of development of protected wells.
